Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder: A new name for an old illness - in this article, part of the Straight Talk by Maria series, you'll learn that this is what we used to call manic-depression.
"People with bipolar disorder have dramatic mood swings. In their periods of mania, they can be thrilling to be around.... The other side of bipolar disorder is depression... "
Along with the new name, Maria writes about the newer, effective treatments.

Bipolar guide, from the National Institute of Mental Health is a longer, but still very readable, discussion of all aspects of Bipolar Disorder.

Depression

The depression guide from the National Institute of Mental Health begins, "In any given year, 18.8 million Americans suffer from a depressive illness." This guide is a great introduction to depression. Highly recommended.

Depression during and after pregnancy - is an easy-to-read guide from the that is primarily aimed at young mothers, although depression can occur at any age. They stress the helpfulness of support groups, which are often not available in Indian country. If you feel strongly about the need for support groups and want to start one, the information on Self-Advocacy in our Adulthood, Aging and Disability workshop may help you. This guide is from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Depression and anxiety disorders in teens - is the topic of this issue of Child Trends newsletter. They give a simple, understandable description of these mental illnesses and good resources for more information. In our experience, the questions included might be offensive on some reservations if asked directly and you might have better success with just listening and talking with the teen in a more informal way.
