MANAGER'S TOOLBOX: Giving Feedback

Although times are changing with the reservation youth growing up with more self-confidence and self esteem than their parents they are still plenty of Indian who have low self-esteem and this affect how they give and react to feedback. An Indian with low self-esteem is often critical and gives critical feedback. This type of individual often has a difficult time accepting even the mildest form of constructive feedback and will respond in a very negative manner.

Then there are the types of families who give little or no feedback at all. Instead, the family member will act as if nothing occurred, good or bad. They may smile when something good occurs, and will become “unreadable” when something negative occurs.
