BY THE NUMBERS - A DAKOTA HISTORY

If you ever told yourself you aren't any good with numbers, you need to forget that right now. Can you count to 11 without taking off your shoes? Have you ever managed to feed six people on a pound of hamburger? Have you ever built anything without running out of material? That's good enough then. You don't need a degree in mathematics, but you DO need to be able to understand the numbers that will be important to you in running your business, income and expenses.

Mathematics has been at the root of Sioux successes for a long, long time.

Even if you are not planning on owning a business, the more you understand about how the business side of your organization runs, the more successful you will be. This is not a new concept. In the book, The Genius of Sitting Bull: 13 heroic strategy for business leaders, the author discusses why Sitting Bull won. The greatest military defeat of the US army occurred at Little Big Horn where all the troops were killed. According to the US army, what did the Sioux possess that made them successful? The first answer, surprising to most people, is knowledge of numbers. They fully knew the size of competition. Custer did not. Second, they had the needed resources in both weapons and personnel. According to their own analysis of the defeat, the federal government concluded that the Indians were successful because ....

“... because they had the leaders, the arms and the overwhelming forces, none of which facts were known or appreciated by the Seventh Century. Their numbers had been underestimated; their leadership and fighting capacity undervalued; their superiority in arms not even suspected. The Seventh Century paid the penalty for national stupidity.” – Lt. Col. W.A. Graham
