Is fear a new Indian tradition?
What a horrible thing to say! How could I possibly say that
about my own people? We have a tradition and history as
warriors. Yet, like Custer's soldiers, what I see today is
tribal employees who are afraid to speak up when they see
us going in the wrong direction. In our workshops, when I
hear participants say,
"More people should come hear this information"
and
I ask, "Well, why didn't they?"
The most common answer I hear is, "Fear. They were afraid.
They were afraid they would lose their jobs. They were
afraid they would make somebody mad at them. "
We cannot have courageous leadership if we afraid to even
hear the truth. And, I do believe, we need to hear it over
and over.
