I often discuss with other tribal members what their feelings are about what types of jobs are needed on the reservation. And most of the time their answers are diffferent. There is a need for more semi-skilled jobs and opportunities for people living on the reservation. I often see and talk with some of these tribal members. I ask them what type of work they would like and most say that it does not matter, as long as the pay is good.
Keeping in mind that unemployment is only one issue that can effect tribal members attitude about working, including lack of housing and transporation opportunties. How do you think or feel Tribal Leaders should plan, decide or determine what type of Tribal Industry should they invest in. Our tribe now pretty much has 3 major employment agencies, The Casino, tribal headquarters and support programs and Manufacturing Corporation. We need to look at more options for tribal members.
There was a visit by a major firm a year ago that conducted community surveys, forums and education on this issue. Hopefully, we will begin to see some benefits from their assistance.

I want to let you know that all the info that was provided to me was very useful, I taught a young lady in the middle school. I had to help transition her out of middleschool special ed into highschool. I didn't know all this info at the time of her teachings but i know i did a great job with her. I no longer teach her in the educational system but do teach her out in her regular life. she has adopted me has her mom. I could help her transition into an independent living through your program. I will recommend it to her. thank you
I Feel we could use a lot more tutors working in the schools........The people should not have to have a child attending school because there are many men and woman who cannot have children that would like to help children out and make a few dollars....
Cutting grass for old people or helping clean thier yards,or picking around the rez as in picking up garbage. Getting young kids to do actives or growing gardens or flowers landscaping
they should have jobs that for the people that don't under stand that good because some people fall behind on there work at there job or they should make jobs for the people that don't understand that good.or thy should close have of the bars down and make a big mall i wouldnt mind working in a mall.

As far as Disabled Tribal members, what other options do they have to find job security other than their local 121 Vocational Rehabilitation Project? How would you answer this question. What is available to help persons with disabilities to find employment? Keep in mind that most can either only work part-time, because of income requirements for receiving SSI or SSDI. When it comes to viewing unemployment most communities including those tribal reservations due not consider those with disabilities as a primary concern for employment. Mainly, because it is assumed that they are receiving income from the Government or state. In fact, many of them want to find work and contribute to the societal workforce. We just need to find jobs that can suit their employment. Not set up more obstacles or barriers.
I often think that if those who are addressing national or state unemployment problems were to focus on creating JOBS that really suited those looking for jobs - including, taken into consideration the unemploys skills and goals, this problem would have a better resolution.

There are not many employment programs on our reservation for persons with disablities. Other than the local Vocational Rehabilitation Project, Turtle Mountain Support Services (DD persons) and local Community College. Other than that a person with a disability has no other options. Unless, they have other skills and can find self employment. But, then again most who are SSI or SSDI have to watch their income and not make more than they are allowed.
My point is that in you local, rural or tribal community persons with disabilities need to come together and take the leadership to improve the lives of all persons, including that of employment.

Everything is needed. More jobs for youth. More jobs for people with disabilities that don't have much education. More jobs with a future. More part time jobs for disabled who can't work full time. More jobs giving services to kids. Everything.
How would you implement these ideas, programs or services, if your tribe is financially runnng in the Red (deficit). Such, as is the case with our tribe. Without the help of programs like Social Security, Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, TWEP, or others alike there would be no services for persons with disabilities or special needs.
What needs to happen in my opinion, is for Tribal leaders to place helping these individuals a top priority, just as they would the elders. After all, many of these elders are and will become partially unable to take care of themselves and will require personal assistance services, just as those with disabilities need.
A good start to this discussion is for disabled tribal members to contact their tribal leaders and begin a dialogue for inclusion and equality.

The jobs we need are there. For disabled people we need jobs where people have patience to help the person learn. We need some way for people who don't know how to come to work every day to get up on time and get to work. Some people just can't read too good. We need to help them. All this is part of getting a job for our people if they are going to be a cashier or work the front desk and not just cleans rooms their whole lives.
Most of these things that Zack is talking about can be accomplished through the support of a Independent Living Center. This is something that myself and many others are trying to establish on our reservation on the Turtle Mountains. A person with a disability or special need can go to this Center to find services, equipment, financial assistance, housing assistance or needs and to be training in employment skills. A person can also learn and work on daily life skills, such as money management or employment training. If you need help please get in touch with your local Independent Living Center in your State.
