Your friendly neighborhood spam warrior

Yes, it has been getting worse lately, hasn't it? I don't  know why. Some days we just get spam attacks and there will be 15 get through at once and other days are pretty calm. We do delete any spam as soon as it appears. Part of the problem is that we are getting to be a bigger and bigger site in terms of the number of visitors, so that makes it attractive to spammers. We are pretty vigilant about deleting them, though. Usually, I can get it down before anyone has viewed it, or  one or two at the most, so I cannot see how it is profitable for these people unless they are getting paid 13 cents an hour.

We are also one of the few forums that does not require registration to post. I have no plans for changing this any time soon as it seems that about 20% of our posts are from guests. Some people don't want to reveal too much about themselves on line and others are just sensitive if they are criticizing a relative or tribal program or just asking for help with a personal problem. We do moderate the site. I know there are other sites where people put up what may be slanderous accusations of particular people or programs. We have never had a problem like that, but if we did, our plan is to either delete the post or, if the point is important but an individual is being accused, to edit out personally identifying information.

Is there any legal action that could be taken against these spamer's. Or do you think that it will have no effect or change?

Re: Your friendly neighborhood spam warrior

I think companies a lot bigger than us have tried to do something about spam. One of the problems is that many of these spam addresses are outside the U.S., so even if we spent the money and won a case in court, there would be no way to collect against them and it would not really have an effect.

I have been seriously considering changing this forum to require registration. I check several times a day to delete the spam but there always see some here and it is often, as Joe says, pretty disgusting.

What do you all think? Should I change the forum so registration is required for posting? Anyone would still be able to read it.

Re: Your friendly neighborhood spam warrior

I have noticed lately that almost every forum I visit requires registration.  The ones that don't have much more spam than SLC does.  If the registration process is brief and easy, I think it would be beneficial.  That way, people won't be completely turned off when they visit the website and be more open to the great postings that are on here ...

You could always give me moderator powers and I could also delete that junk when I see it...
