Historically Native Americans were known for ethical behavior. Present day Native Americans proudly point out this fact to other Indians and non-Indians alike. Some of our most effective leaders of the past shared these common characteristics:
Caring
Compassionate
Courageous,
Honest
Humble
Respectful
Served the People Before Themselves
All of these characteristics can be considered important ethical guidelines in our society.
Traditional leaders of the past were not afraid to stand by these ethical standards. They also dared to face reality. They defined underlying problems of the tribe so those very real problems could be solved. They served all individuals of the tribe, not just a select few.
“I see and admire your manner of living, your good warm houses; your extensive fields of corn, your gardens, your cows, oxen, workhouses, wagons and a thousands machines, that I know not the use of. I see that you are able to clothe yourselves, even from weeds and grass. In short you can do almost what you choose. You whites possess the power of subduing almost ever animal to your use. You are surrounded by slaves. Every thing about you is in chains and you are slaves yourselves. I fear if I should exchange my pursuits for yours I too should become a slave”

I think we have become slaves to the lack of law and order, the lack of ethical behavior, the lack of good leaders, on the reservations. :
