JUVENILE DIABETES

Children with diabetes do not have enough insulin produced by their bodies and take insulin as a medication. As with any other medicine, there is a risk of overdose, and staff must be able to identify the warning signs of hypoglycemia (too much insulin).

Early Symptoms of Insulin Reaction:

  • Tremors
  • Sweating
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Pupils dilated
  • Numbness
  • Abnormal gait
  • Odd behavior
  • Restlessness
  • Skin pallor

Recommendations for Insulin Reaction:

If an insulin reaction is suspected, the child should immediately be given something containing sugar – fruit juice, a cube of sugar, or a piece of candy.  This cannot harm the child and may prevent a severe reaction.  If the child does not improve within a few minutes after the administration of sugar, take him/her to the hospital.
