Throughout my personal and professional experiences I have worked with disabled individuals who have constantly probed this question to me. How do I find a good and reliable Personal Attendant. Since I have no personal or professional references, mainly because there has not been a real need to indentify or find such a person.
What I try to explain and relate to those in discussion is that for most of us living on tribal reservations, we are assisted by family members. And when this fails, we have to rely on Indian Health Services or other agency to provide this care.
My question (s) is: How can we work on developing a Personal Attendant program on Indian reservations?, How would you incorporate personal concerns with truthworthiness, reliability, and cultural values?
I do believe that as I get older and become more debilitated with mobility, I will require the need for a Personal Attendant. I also have concerns for those who are like myself. living by themselves. As we get older, we not only become more ill, but join the elders class as well. Which, may require greater personal care.
