Management by Objective - Our example

Here are some of our objectives, to give you an example.

Computerwoman
The vice-president will write three funded proposals each year.
The president will obtain three commercial contracts for consulting services.
The research administrator will insure that timesheets are completed and forwarded to the accountant and project director in time for funds to be drawn down for payroll (three days in advance of payday).

Examples of objectives for some of our clients.

All children in the program will have an Individual Education Plan updated annually that includes the eight required components of current performance, parent involvement, special services, etc.

Each employee will average $120 in sales each day.

The important point about these objectives is that they are tied to the success of the organization. It does not matter how many proposals the vice-president writes if none of them get funded. It doesn't matter how many people the president meets with if we get no paying customers. It doesn't matter how many hours the employee works if she makes no sales. Too often, we see objectives that relate to process, e.g., "The research administrator will input 10 timesheets a day" - well, if she doesn't get them done in time for everyone to get paid, then it doesn't matter if she enters 100 a day!
