What You Should Know About Vocational Rehabilitation

Worker from Turtle MountainVocational rehabilitation is for helping people with disabilities get and keep jobs. To be eligible, you must have a disability, you must be willing to work.

As a tribal member, you can choose to receive services at the tribal VR office if you live on or near a reservation. You also have the choice to receive services from the state vocational rehabilitation office nearest you. It may even be possible for you to receive services for both programs. One might help you with career counseling and the other might pay for your on-the-job training.

If you don't live near a reservation, you still can obtain VR services from the state program.

Click here for a video produced by the North Dakota Department of Human Services that gives a complete explanation of what vocational rehabilitation is, how you can qualify and what services you can receive.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE VIDEO ON VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION FROM NORTH DAKOTA DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES

SARAH: Hi, my name is Sarah… I’ve been asked to tell you a few things about “Voc Rehab”—that’s short for Vocational Rehabilitation.

They tell me I’m a “star graduate” of the program. I don’t know about that, but I do know Voc Rehab’s made a big difference in my life.

A couple of years ago, I was at a crossroads. I was a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home. It was hard work, but I really liked my job. Then when I injured my back for the third time, my doctor told me I had to call it quits! I needed to change jobs. Not the happiest day for me!
